Diversified Technologies for Fixed Gas Detection

(White Paper by General Monitors): In order to mitigate the potential spread of hazardous events, General Monitors is recommending the use of technology diversification. The term “diversification” is commonly used in the fire, gas, and safety industry to describe the principle behind protection layers; whereby safety layers that don’t share common failures are designed to reduce the probability and severity of hazardous events2.

An effective approach for technology diversity is to use the human sensory model. Like a person who is able to assess danger through his senses, fire and gas systems that rely on a combination of ultrasonic, optical, and conventional detection can provide a better picture of overall plant safety.

Yokogawa Receives FEED Contract from CJV for Arrow LNG Project

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that its subsidiary Yokogawa Engineering Asia Pte. Ltd. has been awarded a contract by CJV, a joint venture comprised of Chiyoda Corporation as JV leader, CB&I, and Saipem S.p.A., to perform the front end engineering design (FEED) for an integrated control and safety system that is to be provided to Arrow Energy for the Arrow LNG Project. For this project, Yokogawa Engineering Asia has been selected as the main automation contractor (MAC※1) by Arrow Energy.

Arrow Energy, a 50/50 joint venture between Shell and CNPC (PetroChina), is planning the development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Curtis Island, which is directly off the coast from the city of Gladstone in South East Queensland, Australia. The project includes the construction of a liquefaction facility, jetties, and offloading facilities. The LNG plant will receive coal bed methane (CBM) from the Surat and Bowen Basins and will process, treat, and liquefy the gas for export. In phase 1 of this project, two 4 million ton per year LNG trains will be constructed. A decision will be made at some later date whether to proceed with the planned construction of two additional trains of equivalent size.

The FEED work commenced in November 2011. Following completion of this preliminary phase and a decision to go ahead with the project, Yokogawa will proceed to supply its CENTUM VP integrated production control system and the ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system as the MAC. In this role, it will work directly with the project's engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors.

Integrating Gas Chromatographs with Control and Device Management

(Emerson Experts Blogs) Gas Chromatographs (GCs) are used in many process-manufacturing processes. Some GC applications include fuel & flare gas analysis, cracking furnace BTU firing rates, gas ratios, and a whole lot more.

I share this for those not already well steeped in the knowledge of GCs as background for an article by Emerson’s Jonas Berge and Michael Gaura in Gas Today Australia. The article, GC made easy: integrating process gas chromatographs, describes how digital communications technologies and standards such as Foundation fieldbus (FF) and Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) have made the information collected by GCs more readily accessible to improve the process and easier to maintain to provide continued accuracy over time.

ABB to acquire Newave to broaden offering in uninterruptible power supply

Zurich and Quartino, Dec. 12, 2011 – ABB (ABBN.VX), the leading power and automation technology group, and Newave Energy Holding SA (NWEN.S), a Switzerland based leader in uninterruptible power supply (UPS), have agreed that ABB will acquire Newave in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately CHF 170 million1. The deal will strengthen ABB’s position in the power control and quality market and provide Newave with significant growth opportunities outside its traditional markets in Europe.

Under the terms of the transaction agreement, ABB today announced a voluntary all-cash public tender offer of CHF 56 per Newave share to purchase all of Newave’s publicly held shares. The offer prospectus will be published on or around Dec. 15. The offer represents a premium of 36.0 percent to the volume-weighted average share price of the last 60 trading days and a 22.4 percent premium to Newave’s closing stock price on Dec. 9. The Committee of independent members of the Board of Directors of Newave will unconditionally recommend that Newave shareholders tender their shares in the offer.

Carbon dioxide is an inexpensive and versatile gas that is useful in diverse applications from beverage carbonation to enhanced oil recovery techniques. While nonflammable and fairly innocuous, leaks can be dangerous. Exposure to atmospheric concentrations above 5,000 ppm is considered unhealthy, making careful monitoring crucial at lower levels. Atmospheric concentrations at 1% v/v (10,000 ppm) will make some people feel drowsy while concentrations of 7% v/v and higher can lead to symptoms including dizziness, headache, visual and hearing dysfunction, and unconsciousness.

Mike Caliel appointed President and CEO of Invensys Operations Management

Invensys plc announces the appointment of Michael J (Mike) Caliel as President and CEO of Invensys Operations Management with effect from 1 January 2012.

Mike was previously with Invensys from 1993 to 2006, latterly as Chief Executive of Invensys Process Systems, the largest of the predecessor companies that were brought together to form Invensys Operations Management in early 2009. He has over 25 years experience in the industry and was until recently CEO of Integrated Electrical Services, Inc.

He is taking over from Sudipta Bhattacharya who joined the Group in 2007 as President of the Wonderware Software division and has been the leader of Invensys Operations Management since February 2009. Sudipta has decided to leave next year to take up a new role outside Invensys. In the meantime, he will be working with Mike to ensure a smooth transition of responsibilities within the division and will also be assisting on group business development in the Middle East and Asia.
